Great burger places come and go, but only the best have the staying power to gain a loyal following across multiple generations. Helvetia Tavern in Hillsboro can boast this claim, and its current owners have made just the right updates to keep that fan base growing into the next century.
Once a local biker bar, motorcycles now share their parking spaces with bicycles thanks to the active Helvetia Bike Loop that brings cyclists of all kinds right to the tavern’s doors. Families are also finding their place at the table with several menu choices for the tricycle set.
Helvetia Tavern’s famous burgers continue to be the most requested item on their expanded menu, with the double-decker “Jumbo” cheeseburger being the star.
Served up on a plate-sized bun, its two all beef patties are sandwiched between toasted buns on a bed of lettuce, tomato, and onion and a generous slathering of their special secret sauce. Pickles and chips come with it, but you may want to try the their delicious fries or onion rings for a side. Order the “Half and Half” plate if you can’t decide which you love most and plan to share.
If you’re in the mood for something a little lighter deli sandwiches and several different salad combinations have been added to the menu. The Country Cobb is a great choice to enjoy as you watch the sun set over the beautiful Helvetia farmland from their two-tiered patio seating area.
Next time you’re heading to the Coast plan to stop at Helvetia Tavern, where the staying power of a great burger has anchored this restaurant for over ninety years—and counting.
